"Peggy
has done it again. Owner of the
fantastic Carlton Curry House,
Peggy has now created another
amazing Indian eatery, this time
in Fitzroy. We visit Melbourne
every year from New Zealand for
a shopping trip and always
ensure we have a couple of meals
at the Carlton Curry House. This
time we tried Peggy's new
restaurant at 240 Johnston St,
Fitzroy. Amazing is all I can
say! The menu has the
traditional Indian favourites
but also boasts a Summer menu.
Ask for the Manchuri
cauliflower. I don't think it's
on the menu yet but is truly
sensational. As is the mango
chicken, paneer kofta and warm
chicken salad. As always, Peggy
runs a smooth operation, with
very efficient and friendly
service. The ambience is warm
and inviting, with lots of
character. And being an
economical place to dine helps
as well. We will definitely be
back."

"We
actually went to the sister
restaurant the 'Fitzroy Curry
House' last night, details on
their website. The matar paneer
was absolutely delicious, fresh
and pure, service was superb and
friendly. I'm gluten-free and
they catered wonderfully. And
the bill for two of us was $33,
unbeatable."

"Just wanted to let you
let you know how yummy your food
was and how great it was to get
it really quickly.
When you had over charged us you
were honest and dropped the
change off with free dessert
which was amazing.
We will definitely use you
again!!! Thanks"

"Those mourning the loss of the
popular Guru da Dhaba may be
somewhat mollified by the new
Indian restaurant that has
sprung from its ashes. The
“Guru” was a Fitzroy institution
that closed after many years of
trade and was followed by the
short-lived Tandoori Station.
This newest arrival is the
sibling of the well-established
and highly rated Carlton Curry
House and looks set to offer
Fitzroy locals the same quality
of cuisine and service. The
decor remains fairly unchanged
from its predecessors, with
simple tiled floors, a kitsch
corner bar and ever-present
Bollywood music videos on the
television screen. Opt for a
window seat not for the street
views but for a glimpse into the
kitchen, where the chefs wrangle
flaming pots and pans as they
prepare a wide variety of mild
and spicy curries and dishes
fresh from the charcoal-heated
clay tandoor oven.
Staff are welcoming and eager to
please, and the menu is
accommodating with many
vegetarian, vegan and
gluten-free options available.
Start with crispy onionbhajiasor
a selection of tandoori
specialties before sampling
classic Indian curries such as
beef vindaloo, Goan fish curry,
chickenmakhanior
lamb rogan josh. The North
Indian style goat curry is a
standout, with rich, tender meat
cooked on the bone in ginger,
garlic, tomato and spices. Naan
and roti bread are on hand for
essential mopping up operations
and, to finish, cooling homemade
kulfi ice-cream or gulab jamun –
sweet milk dumplings in
rosewater syrup – are a great
way to end a meal. Prices are
very reasonable for the generous
portions offered and some great
take-away deals also make this a
great local option for lovers of
good Indian food."

"A friend and I were in
Melbourne last week (Wed 10th
Feb 2010) and were looking for a
good restaurant on Lygon St. We
didn't really feel like Italian
so when we came across the
Carlton Curry House we thought
we'd give it a try.
Well I'm glad we did because it
was easily the best Indian food
we'd ever had. We're both from
Sydney and have eaten in many
Indian restaurants before but
the food at the Carlton Curry
House was rich in flavour and a
pleasure to eat.
Our waitress Monica was friendly
and helpful and the meal was
delightlly tasty and well priced
too.
I'd recommend anyone who likes
good quality Indian food to eat
at the Carlton Curry House. I'll
be back next time I'm in
Melbourne without a doubt!
Cheers, "

"It was quite by
accident that I
discovered this
hidden gem, and I am
glad that I did.
The service was
fantastic and
bettered only by the
wonderfully fresh,
delightfully
aromatic and
exceptionally tasty
food.
It is without a
doubt, the best
Indian food that I
have ever had.
You could tell that
everything was made
freshly on premises,
from the raiata to
the chutneys, to the
curry sauces and
each dish was
lovingly prepared
and beautifully
presented.
It is obvious that
the chef is
extremely passionate
about his food and
it really comes
through in the
flavours and
presentation.
We had the samosa,
the chicken tikka,
the Goan fish curry,
the chilli chicken
and garlic naan.
The highlights were
definitely the fish
curry and chicken
tikka - both cooked
with heat levels to
order and the burn
of the spices was
wonderfully
tempered, starting
slowly so as not to
overwhelm the
palette, and heating
up the mouth nicely
as one continued to
eat.
Ms Peggy, the owner
was a gracious host
and the waiter was
exceptionally
attentive. I
couldn't recommend
this place highly
enough.
If you like
Indian... actually,
if you like good
food full stop, you
have to check out
the Carlton Curry
house."

"We love the Carlton precinct but had virtually stopped coming because of the
monotony of wall-to-wall Mediterranean restaurants.
We do love Latin fare, but stumbling on Peggy's Carlton Curry House renewed our
interest in Lygon Street. The Indian cuisine is excellent; the wine list short
but good quality; the decor is simple and homely; the service is attentive and
unassuming. This is just as we like it.
It's the food that really matters here - we had traditional Indian samosas with
a zingy tamarind sauce, chicken Madras and subtle lamb Bhuna, accompanied by
rice, naan and pappadams, of course.
The lamb was simply exceptional and the other dishes were notably good. A
seriously good but cheap pinot noir made a great meal even better.
This Indian fare is as good as we've had anywhere in Melbourne.
And it's worth noting that we left seriously full with a lot of change from
$100.
That's the first time for ages!
The Carlton Curry House is sure to become a favourite of ours. We'll be back
soon."
